Circa 2199, humanity is fighting a war against intelligent machines which started in 2085. In order to deny the machines their main power source -- solar energy -- the humans scorched the sky, permanently blocking out the sun's light. Operating from their base in Zero One -- the main city of the vast Machine World City Empire -- the machines responded by enslaving human beings and using them as a source of bio-electric and thermal energy. From then on, humans started to be harvested inside womb-like vats attached to giant structures in endless fields throughout the planet.

In order to keep the human population docile whilst they are connected to generators and their energy is harvested, the machines designed a computer programme called the Matrix. This programme is fed directly into the brain of every human being soon after his birth through a cybernetic implant -- also developed by the machines -- located at the back of the neck and grafted on every newborn baby. From the moment they are born until the moment they die, human beings are plugged into the Matrix programme.

The Matrix is a programme which concept is similar to The Sims life simulation computer game. It is a simulated reality in which the human beings, permanently plugged into it, live their daily lives. The Matrix consists primarily of a vast unnamed megacity which resembles the city of Sydney, Australia, circa 1999. Within this virtual world, human beings grow up, live and develop just like they would in any normal urban environment at the end of the 20th century. The Matrix is in fact so detailed that humans plugged into this computer programme believe that it is in fact their true reality and end up spending all their life within this fake, virtual world.

Inside the Matrix programme, human beings grow up, learn, move, interact with each other, they eat, work, fight, walk, sleep. They also think, feel emotions, experience stimulation from their five senses, they suffer, bleed, get sick, they love, hate, feel happy or sad, and ultimately they die. When they die inside the Matrix programme, either from natural or accidental causes, humans also die outside the Matrix, the illusion of the virtual world being so strong that their mind is convinced that this virtual death inside the Matrix is real. When they realise that one of the humans they are harvesting is dead, the machines simply get rid of the dead body by physically disconnecting it from the various cables and wires attached to it, before disposing of it in the sewer system.

As the Matrix environment is practically indistinguishable from reality, the majority of humans connected to the Matrix are unaware of its true nature. However, some humans were disconnected from the Matrix programme while still alive and therefore "woke up" to face the true, war-torn reality of the end of the 22nd century. The free humans, disconnected from the Matrix, live in Zion, the last human city on Earth, buried deep underground for both concealment from its enemies as well as warmth. A group of these free humans work to unplug still-imprisoned humans from the Matrix and recruit them into their resistance against the machines.

Neo is the
hacker alias of Thomas A. Anderson, who was one of the millions of humans connected to the Matrix at birth and grown into captivity by the intelligent machines. Just like everyone else, Neo lived an artificial life inside the Matrix, convinced that his life and his job as a quiet programmer for the respectable software company Metacortex, were the true reality. He was also a computer hacker, operating under his alias of Neo, penetrating computer systems illicitly and stealing information.

He then met with another well-known hacker, going by the name of Morpheus, who tried to explain him that the world he was living in -- the buildings, the people, the clothes -- was in fact a fake world that had been pulled over his eyes to blind him from the truth.

"Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself."
- Morpheus
Neo accepted to be shown the real world as it truly was and was therefore disconnected from the Matrix software by Morpheus and his companions. After "waking up" in the vat where he had been harvested all his life by the machines, Neo was brought aboard the futuristic Nebuchadnezzar hovercraft captained by Morpheus and operated by his crew.

While learning about the war and the true nature of the Matrix, Neo also learned that Morpheus had freed him because he believed him to be The One who, when connected to the Matrix and according to a prophetic legend, could override its computer-created simulated rules, and perceive and manipulate its code directly, performing what could then be seen as impossible feats or miracles. But more importantly, the prophecy mentioned that The One would bring the perpetual war between men and machines to an end.

Joining Morpheus' crew in their quest to end the war, Neo kept questioning his true purpose and whether he was indeed the saviour prophesied by the Oracle, despite displaying never-seen abilities while inside the Matrix -- such as dodging bullets, flying and even cheating death -- as well as outside the Matrix -- such as destroying Sentinels with his apparently psychokinetic power and "seeing" the aura of people and objects even after loosing his sight.

Developing strong feelings for Morpheus' first officer and close ally Trinity, Neo chose to save her life instead of abiding to the purpose which had been designed for him by the Architect, the creator of the Matrix programme. According to the Architect, Neo had to fulfil his purpose as the sixth One and allow for a sixth cycle of destruction and re-creation of humanity. Rejecting that role imposed on him, Neo chose to ignore the Architect's dire warnings of consequences, and to save Trinity, his love, from certain death instead.

In the meantime, Agent Smith, a sentient programme originally designed to police the Matrix world and prevent connected humans from becoming disconnected rebels, had started corrupting the Matrix programme like a virus, aiming at the destruction of both men and machines alike. Neo decided to travel to Zero One, a trip during which Trinity apparently died in an hovercraft crash, to negotiate a truce with the machines by offering them to eliminate Smith. During his latest fight with Neo, Smith copied himself into him but by doing so, his code became accessible to the machines through the Neo's uplink. Then, as they found themselves with a viable copy of Smith's code, the machines were able to quickly destroy him.

This process of Smith's destruction apparently destroyed Neo's consciousness as well and Neo's body was taken away reverently by the machines into Zero One, while in Zion, the machines had stopped their attack and retreated. As well as peace, Neo had also negotiated that any human mind that become aware of the nature of the Matrix shall be allowed to be freed without interference.
